In-depth answers to common Xaciato questions, fact-checked against the sources cited in each.
What is Xaciato used for?
Xaciato is a prescription vaginal gel designed to treat bacterial vaginosis, a common vaginal infection characterized by an imbalance of natural bacteria. Belonging to the lincosamide class of antibiotics, it works by stopping bacterial growth through inhibition of protein synthesis. Applied directly into the vagina, Xaciato addresses symptoms including abnormal vaginal discharge, odor, and discomfort. The medication is for intravaginal use only.
What dosage options are available for Xaciato?
Xaciato is supplied as a single-dose treatment. Each applicatorful delivers 5 grams of vaginal gel containing 100 milligrams of clindamycin. The prefilled applicator should be discarded after use. Always administer the medication exactly as your healthcare provider has prescribed.
What side effects can occur with Xaciato use?
Most side effects associated with Xaciato are mild and localized. Common reactions include mild itching or irritation, redness, slight swelling, and a burning sensation at the application site. Secondary yeast infections may also develop. Rarely, more serious adverse effects occur, including severe allergic reactions and Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea. Any severe or persistent symptoms warrant immediate medical evaluation. Discuss potential risks and safety concerns with your healthcare provider before starting treatment.
How long is the treatment course with Xaciato?
Xaciato requires only a single application. One applicatorful (5 grams of vaginal gel containing 100 milligrams of clindamycin) represents the complete course of treatment—no additional doses are needed. Use it according to your healthcare provider's instructions.
Which is more effective for bacterial vaginosis: Xaciato or metronidazole?
Both Xaciato and metronidazole effectively treat bacterial vaginosis, though they differ in administration. Xaciato requires only one intravaginal application, whereas metronidazole is typically taken as an oral tablet or applied topically as a cream or gel over five to seven days. Metronidazole is available in generic formulations, which may affect cost, while Xaciato remains brand-name only. The best choice depends on your infection severity, personal preference regarding dosage form, and healthcare provider recommendation. Discuss your treatment options with your doctor to determine which medication suits your situation.
