What is Azithromycin used for?

Azithromycin is best known for its short course — a standard "Z-Pak" is done in five days, compared to the 7–14 days typical of many other antibiotics — and for reaching high concentrations inside tissue that persist for days after the last dose, which is the pharmacological reason the course can be so short.

It's commonly prescribed for respiratory infections (including "walking pneumonia," caused by atypical bacteria that don't respond well to penicillins), certain sexually transmitted infections, and as an alternative for people with a true penicillin allergy who need treatment for an infection that would otherwise call for one. It does not treat viral infections, including most sore throats, colds, and the flu.

Because of a 2013 FDA safety communication about a small increased risk of a specific heart rhythm problem (QT prolongation) in people with existing heart rhythm risk factors, it's worth mentioning any heart rhythm history to your prescriber before starting it — for most people without that risk factor, this isn't a practical concern.

Not all antibiotics pair safely with ibuprofen, however. Medications affecting stomach function—such as doxycycline and prednisone—can create interactions. Certain antibiotics that increase bleeding risk should not be combined with ibuprofen, which also raises bleeding potential. Amoxicillin paired with ibuprofen may produce gastrointestinal side effects, and this combination warrants particular caution in patients with heart, kidney, or liver disease.

Ibuprofen may cause abdominal pain, burping, bloating, reduced urine output, indigestion, itchy skin, or shortness of breath.
