What is Daptomyc used for?
Daptomycin-sodium chloride is the same cyclic lipopeptide antibiotic as standard daptomycin, supplied as a ready-to-use premixed IV bag in saline rather than a powder vial that a pharmacist reconstitutes and dilutes before infusion. Hospitals use these premix bags to save a compounding step for routine, weight-based doses, which reduces the risk of preparation errors — the tradeoff is less flexibility for doses that fall outside the bag's fixed strength, where a reconstituted vial may still be needed.
Everything that applies to daptomycin applies here: it's a Reserve-category antibiotic under WHO's AWaRe framework, used for serious Gram-positive infections such as MRSA bloodstream infections, right-sided endocarditis, and complicated skin infections that haven't responded to first-line therapy. It does not work for pneumonia, since lung surfactant inactivates the drug, and it isn't approved for left-sided endocarditis.
