Will my insurance cover the cost of daptomycin?

Your out-of-pocket cost for daptomycin depends on your specific insurance plan, coverage tier, and deductible status. Importantly, daptomycin may be classified as a medical benefit rather than a prescription drug benefit under your plan, which can affect your copay or coinsurance amount. Contact your insurance provider or the hospital or clinic administering your infusion to confirm your coverage and expected costs.

Is daptomycin covered by Medicare, and what would I pay?

Daptomycin is typically covered under Medicare prescription drug plans (Part D) or may be covered as a medical benefit under Medicare Part B, depending on how it is administered and billed. Your actual costs will vary based on your specific plan and whether you have met your deductible. Speak with your Medicare representative or the infusion center to clarify your coverage details and expected out-of-pocket expenses.

Does a generic version of daptomycin exist?

Daptomycin is already available as a generic intravenous formulation from multiple manufacturers, including Sagent, Dr. Reddy's, and Fresenius Kabi. The original brand-name version is marketed as Cubicin. Both generic and brand-name versions are bioequivalent and FDA-approved.

Daptomycin is a generic prescription antibiotic administered intravenously to treat bacterial infections affecting the skin, bloodstream, and the inner lining of the heart's right side. It works by disrupting bacterial cell walls, ultimately causing the bacteria to die. A healthcare provider delivers daptomycin as either a slow injection or intravenous infusion. This is a summary of the official FDA label text, not personalized medical advice. It does not list every possible interaction or side effect. Always tell your prescriber and pharmacist about every medicine and supplement you take.

Contraindications

4 CONTRAINDICATIONS Daptomycin for injection is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to daptomycin. [see Warnings and Precautions ( 5.1 )]. • Known hypersensitivity to daptomycin ( 4 )

Known drug interactions

7 DRUG INTERACTIONS 7.1 HMG-CoA Reductase Inhibitors In healthy adult subjects, concomitant administration of daptomycin and simvastatin had no effect on plasma trough concentrations of simvastatin, and there were no reports of skeletal myopathy [see Clinical Pharmacology ( 12.3 )] . However, inhibitors of HMG-CoA reductase may cause myopathy, which is manifested as muscle pain or weakness associated with elevated levels of creatine phosphokinase (CPK). In the adult Phase 3 S. aureus bacteremia/endocarditis trial, some patients who received prior or concomitant treatment with an HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor developed elevated CPK [see Adverse Reactions ( 6.1 )] .

Pregnancy & breastfeeding

8.1 Pregnancy Risk Summary Limited published data on use of daptomycin in pregnant women are insufficient to inform a drug-associated risk for major birth defects and miscarriage. In animal reproduction studies performed in rats and rabbits daptomycin was administered intravenously during organogenesis at doses 2 and 4-times, respectively, the recommended 6 mg/kg human dose (on a body surface area basis). No evidence of adverse developmental outcomes was observed.

What is the typical cost of daptomycin for uninsured patients?

The full retail price for daptomycin is approximately $1,490.36 per course of three 500 mg vials. Uninsured or underinsured patients may qualify for prescription discount programs that can substantially reduce this cost. The actual price you pay depends on the specific program or discount card you use and whether your healthcare facility accepts it.

What exactly is daptomycin and how does it work?

Daptomycin is an FDA-approved lipopeptide antibiotic that treats bacterial infections of the skin, bloodstream, and the inner lining of the heart. It functions by binding to bacterial cell walls, disrupting cellular activity and ultimately killing the bacteria. Because it is inactivated by lung surfactant, daptomycin is ineffective for pneumonia treatment. Its unique mechanism of action makes it particularly valuable against multidrug-resistant bacteria, sometimes called superbugs, that do not respond to conventional antibiotics.

What dosing options are available for daptomycin?

Daptomycin is administered intravenously as either a slow injection over approximately two minutes or as a longer infusion lasting about 30 minutes. A healthcare professional determines the appropriate administration method and dosage based on the infection type and patient factors.

What side effects can daptomycin cause?

Many patients tolerate daptomycin well with no or minimal side effects. The most commonly reported adverse effects include localized reactions at the infusion site, such as pain, redness, irritation, and soreness. Other frequently observed side effects are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, constipation, dizziness, back pain, rash, itching, elevated blood pressure, and sweating. Some patients report mood or mental changes, including anxiety. While daptomycin allergies are uncommon, severe allergic reactions including anaphylaxis—a potentially life-threatening emergency—can occur. Seek immediate medical attention if you believe you are experiencing an allergic reaction to daptomycin. This summary does not cover all possible side effects. Discuss potential adverse effects and your individual medical situation with your healthcare provider before starting treatment.
