What is Baxdela used for?
Baxdela (delafloxacin) is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic approved by the FDA for acute bacterial skin and skin structure infections and community-acquired bacterial pneumonia in adults. It's available as both an oral tablet and an IV infusion, and its oral absorption is good enough that switching between the IV and oral forms partway through treatment is a standard part of how it's used in practice.
Like every fluoroquinolone, Baxdela carries the class's FDA boxed warning: the risk of tendinitis and tendon rupture, peripheral neuropathy that can be permanent, and central nervous system effects such as confusion or seizures — reactions that can occur together and don't always resolve after stopping the drug. Fluoroquinolones can also worsen muscle weakness in people with myasthenia gravis. Because of these risks, the FDA has advised that fluoroquinolones as a class be reserved for infections with no other reasonable treatment option, rather than used as a routine first choice when a narrower-spectrum antibiotic would work just as well.
The WHO AWaRe framework classifies delafloxacin as a Watch antibiotic — effective, but one whose use should be monitored to help limit the development of resistance. One practical note: antacids, iron, calcium, and multivitamins containing iron or zinc can significantly interfere with how well the oral tablet is absorbed if taken too close together.

Delafloxacin inhibits two bacterial enzymes — DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV — that bacteria need to copy and repair their DNA.

The disruption is lethal to the cell — delafloxacin is bactericidal.

Contraindications
4 CONTRAINDICATIONS BAXDELA is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to delafloxacin or any of the fluoroquinolone class of antibacterial drugs, or any of the components of BAXDELA [see Warnings and Precautions (5.6) ] . Known hypersensitivity to BAXDELA or other fluoroquinolones. ( 4 , 5.6 )
