In-depth answers to common Orbactiv questions, fact-checked against the sources cited in each.

What is Orbactiv and how does it work?

Orbactiv is an antibiotic medication prescribed to treat serious bacterial infections affecting the skin. The active ingredient, oritavancin, works by inhibiting bacterial growth. This drug is effective only against bacterial infections and will not treat viral conditions such as colds or influenza. A healthcare professional administers Orbactiv as a single intravenous injection delivered over approximately three hours. Your doctor will determine the appropriate dose based on your medical history, current medications, and how your body responds to treatment. If symptoms do not improve after receiving the injection, contact your doctor. The medication can affect the results of certain medical tests for up to five days following administration, so inform any healthcare providers you see during this window that you have received Orbactiv.

What side effects might occur with Orbactiv treatment?

Common side effects associated with Orbactiv include flushing, itching, nausea, and headaches. Report any of these effects to your doctor or pharmacist, particularly if they persist or worsen. Your physician determined that the benefits of this medication outweigh potential risks when prescribing it to you. Most patients taking Orbactiv experience no serious adverse effects. In rare instances, the drug may trigger Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea, a severe intestinal condition that can develop during treatment or weeks to months afterward. Seek immediate medical attention if you develop ongoing diarrhea, stomach pain, cramping, or notice blood and mucus in your stool. Consult your healthcare provider for a complete discussion of potential side effects, as this summary is not exhaustive.
