Antibiotics and Yeast Infection

Can Antibiotics Cause Yeast Infection?

The strange thing about Antibiotics and Yeast Infections is that whilst antibiotics are well known for being able to cure a variety of other infections, they can actually cause yeast infections or make existing yeast infections even worse. Although this might seem like a strange thing to happen with antibiotics, as they are well known for curing many infections there is actually a valid reason for it.

A yeast infection is an infection that is caused by a group of fungi or yeast. Yeast infections usually occur in warm places and some of the most likely places to get a yeast infection include the mouth, underarms and even the vagina. The thing about yeast infections is that like a lot of other infection’s, a small amount of yeast in the body will not normally give you any problems with your health at all but as they grow and multiply, the yeast turns to an infection and this usually requires medical attention.

Antibiotics are used to cure all sorts of infection and you will have probably have antibiotics in the past if you have ever had infections such as an ear infection or tonsillitis, but with yeast infections, it is an entirely different story. The relationship between yeast infections and antibiotics is a strange one and it is something that you need to understand as much as possible if you are looking to treat your yeast infection.

When it comes to our bodies, our immune system is the part of them that keeps everything in order and helps to control infections and help the spread of them. However, when antibiotics are in the body, it actually causes some small chemical changes in the immune system and this can sometimes lead to health complications. Antibiotics actually disrupt the number of certain types of bacteria in the body and it is for this reason that a lot of yeast infections are actually caused by antibiotics.

Antibiotics are designed to harm the bad bacteria that exists in the body which is already causing other health problems, however, the problem with this is that they can also sometimes kill the good bacteria in the body and this can allow the bad bacteria such as a small amount of yeast in the body to quickly multiply and become an infection.

There are a number of ways to treat yeast infections that have been caused by antibiotics and it is recommended that you see a doctor if it seems that this is happening to you. A lot of yeast infections are often caused by certain antibiotic creams or oral medicines and one of the most likely types of yeast infection that you will get from antibiotics is oral thrush.

Of course, as with any other illness, there are ways that you can help to prevent the infection and there are also ways that you can help to decrease the risk whilst you are on antibiotics. One of the things that you can actually do is to eat foods such as natural yogurt, grapefruit extracts and even garlic. These types of foods are known as probiotics which actually help to fight yeast infections. You should also use mild soaps when bathing. Of course, the most important thing to do is to seek medical help and this should be done in all situations.
